SI prefixes, and what they multiply by

Every prefix the converter above understands, with the factor it applies to the base unit. Reading across: 1 kΩ is 10³ ohms, 1 µF is 10⁻⁶ farads, and one step between adjacent prefixes is a factor of a thousand — which is why 1 µF is 1,000 nF and 1 nF is 1,000 pF.

Decibels

The decibel tab is a ratio, not a prefix, so it works differently: power ratios use 10 log₁₀(P₂/P₁) and voltage ratios use 20 log₁₀(V₂/V₁). The factor of two is not a convention — power goes as the square of voltage into the same impedance, so the same ratio expressed in volts needs twice the coefficient to land on the same number of decibels. A doubling of power is about +3 dB; a doubling of voltage is about +6 dB.
