Worked example
12 V across a load drawing 500 mA.
- P = V × I = 12 × 0.5 = 6 W
- The load looks like R = V / I = 12 / 0.5 = 24 Ω
- Check with the other form: P = V² / R = 144 / 24 = 6 W ✓
6 W, from a load equivalent to 24 Ω.
Where you'll use it
Choosing a resistor wattage, sizing a supply, or deciding whether a part needs a heatsink. The I²R form is the one that matters for cables and windings, where resistance is fixed and current varies.
