How to choose
1) For mains work, genuine CAT III rating and HRC-fused current inputs are non-negotiable. 2) True RMS if you'll meet inverters/dimmers/SMPS. 3) Auto-ranging + backlight + continuity latency (fast beep) drive daily happiness. 4) Capacitance and temperature ranges cover most bench needs. 5) One good meter beats three cheap ones — but a spare cheap one for current (fuse sacrifices) is wise.
Pinout & package
Handheld with rotary dial, LCD, two probes (red/black), often a K-type thermocouple and transistor socket. Probes have their own CAT ratings — keep the caps on the tips for high-energy work.

- Diode-mode reading 0.6 V forward / OL reverse to verify a junction
- Measuring current by breaking the circuit and inserting the meter in series (then moving the probe BACK to the V jack!)
- Voltage-drop testing a car earth strap under cranking load
Common failures
Blown internal fuse after measuring voltage with probes left in the current jack (the classic), worn rotary contacts (erratic readings), broken probe leads at the strain relief, drained battery reading low, and cheap meters dying across mains transients.
How to test
Check against known references: a fresh alkaline cell ≈1.6 V, a 1% resistor, mains ≈230 V. Continuity-test its own probes. If DC-V works but current ranges read zero, the fuse is blown — replace with the same HRC type, never wire or glass on a CAT-rated meter.
Substitutes
A clamp meter substitutes for high-current measurement without breaking the circuit; a bench meter for precision; a scope shows what a DMM averages away. Nothing replaces having at least one trustworthy DMM.
