Ceramic vs Tantalum Capacitor

Capacitor (ceramic / MLCC) and Capacitor (tantalum) compared — what each is better at, and which one the job actually calls for.

Ceramic (MLCC) is the cheapest, smallest and best-behaved at high frequency — but a class-2 dielectric can lose a large fraction of its rated capacitance under DC bias, which catches people out badly in small packages. Tantalum holds its value steadily across voltage and temperature in a small can, which is why it survives on analogue rails, but it fails short-circuit and sometimes spectacularly, so it needs serious voltage derating.

What each one is

Capacitor (ceramic / MLCC)

Stores energy in an electric field. Ceramic caps are small, cheap, non-polarised, and the workhorse for filtering and decoupling.

Capacitor (tantalum)

A polarized capacitor that uses tantalum metal for its electrodes, offering high capacitance per volume and stable performance. Commonly used in power supply filtering and timing circuits.

How much charge it stores. Usually pF, nF or uF.
Voltage rating(V)
Max voltage before breakdown. Pick at least 2x your working voltage.
Tolerance(%)
Variation from marked value; ceramics can be loose (±10-20%).
Dielectric class(-)
C0G = stable/precise; X7R = general; Y5V = bulk but drifts with temp/voltage.

Capacitor (tantalum)

Charge storage capacity. Common values: 1µF to 100µF, up to 1000µF.
Voltage rating(Volt (V))
Max DC voltage before breakdown. Must be > circuit operating voltage.
Tolerance(%)
How far the real value can stray from marked value (e.g. ±10%, ±20%).
ESR(Ohm (Ω))
Equivalent Series Resistance. Lower is better for power filtering.
Leakage current(µA)
Current that flows when voltage is applied. Should be very low.

How to choose

Capacitor (ceramic / MLCC)

Decoupling -> 100nF near each IC. Filtering -> match to cutoff frequency. Always voltage rating >= 2x working voltage. Use C0G for timing/precision.

Capacitor (tantalum)

1) Determine needed capacitance and voltage. 2) Select voltage rating > circuit max. 3) Check ESR for power apps. 4) Consider tolerance for timing circuits. 5) Observe polarity!

How each one fails

Capacitor (ceramic / MLCC)

Cracks (mechanical/thermal) cause shorts; capacitance drops with applied DC voltage (X7R/Y5V).

Capacitor (tantalum)

Short-circuit from voltage spikes or reverse polarity (often catastrophic). Capacitance loss or increased ESR over time. Visible: bulging, discoloration, or leakage.
